Monocouche Render in Ireland

Monocouche costs €50–€75 per m² in Ireland. It's a cement render with the colour in the mix, put on in one thick coat and scraped back to a sandy texture, so there's no painting.

One coat, coloured through

Monocouche is French for one coat. A factory-mixed cement render with the colour and water-repellent built in goes on thick, by hand or by machine, then it's left to firm up and scraped with a toothed float to open the surface.

It's at its best on new, even blockwork: a new house, an extension or a garage. On old, uneven walls it needs a levelling coat first, and on sound old render a thin-coat silicone is often the better choice.

The weak spot is curing. Put on in cold, damp weather, a cement render can come up with white patches (lime bloom, or efflorescence) as salts dry out on the face. That's why good contractors only do monocouche in a dry, mild spell and protect it from rain.

Questions we get asked

How much is monocouche render per m²?

€50–€75 per m² in Ireland, supplied and applied.

Is monocouche better than silicone?

On new block walls monocouche is quick and does the whole job in one coat. Silicone sheds water and dirt better and suits re-rendering over old render.

Why has my monocouche gone patchy?

Usually lime bloom: salts drying out on the face after the render got wet or cold while curing. It often weathers off; a contractor can clean it or apply a coloured coating.

Can monocouche be painted?

It doesn't need it, but it can be painted with a breathable masonry paint if the colour fades or patches.
