Render Repair and Cracked Render

Most render repairs are cracks, hollow patches or stains. Small repairs are priced after a look, usually by the day (€200–€300 for a plasterer); if more than a few patches have come away, re-rendering the wall is often better value.

What the cracks mean, how a repair is done, and when to re-render instead.

Free, no obligation. One local contractor prices it, not five.

  • €200–€300a day for a plasterer
  • €350–€500a day with a labourer
  • Hairlinecracks are usually surface only
  • Hollowpatches have to come off

What the cracks are telling you

What you seeUsuallyThe fix
Fine hairline cracks in a webThe finish shrank as it driedA flexible coating, or nothing
One straight crack along a jointMovement between blocks, or at a lintelCut out, mesh, patch
A crack with a bulge, or a hollow ringRender coming away from the wallHack off the patch and re-render it
Wide or stepped cracks that growPossible movement in the wallAn engineer first, then the render
Green or black streaksAlgae where water runsA biocide wash; fix the drip

A patch rarely matches perfectly. On a painted wall it disappears under the paint; on a coloured render, the contractor may suggest doing the whole wall in one go so there's no visible line.

Questions we get asked

How much does render repair cost?

It depends on the size. Small repairs are priced after a look, often by the day: €200–€300 for a plasterer, €350–€500 with a labourer.

Are cracks in render serious?

Fine hairline cracks usually aren't. Cracks with a bulge, a hollow sound, or wide cracks that grow need a look, and a wall that's moving needs an engineer.

Can you patch silicone render?

Yes, but a patch can show. Many contractors re-coat the whole wall in the finish so it's one even colour.
