Sand and Cement Render

Sand and cement render costs €35–€60 per m² in Ireland, the lowest price of any render to apply. It goes on in two coats by hand and is then painted, so budget for repainting as it weathers.

The traditional two coats

A small white rendered cottage among dry stone walls, with more houses on the hill behind

A scratch coat goes on first and is scored so the next coat grips. Once it's firm, the finish coat goes on and is floated smooth or textured. When it has cured, the wall is painted with a masonry paint.

It's the render on a great many older Irish houses, and it's still the cheapest to put on. The cost comes later: paint fades and flakes on a weather side, and a painted wall needs doing again every several years, with scaffold or a long ladder each time.

Through-coloured finishes (silicone, acrylic, monocouche) cost more per m² but take the painting away. Over twenty years that often evens out.
