Render Cleaning and Maintenance

Wash render with a biocide and a soft brush or low pressure, not a pressure washer held close: high pressure can blow the surface off. Keep gutters and sills sound, and seal gaps around windows, and a good render lasts decades.

Algae and stains, how to wash each finish, and the small jobs that stop big ones.

Free, no obligation. One local contractor prices it, not five.

Step 1 of 3

No photo handy?

Washing render without damaging it

  1. Find the cause: green streaks under a sill or a leaking gutter will come back until the drip is fixed.
  2. Apply a biocide made for masonry and leave it to work.
  3. Rinse with low pressure or a soft brush. A pressure washer held close can strip a thin coat and drive water behind it.
  4. Leave it to dry before judging the result: algae stains fade over weeks.
FinishUpkeep
SiliconeStays cleanest; a gentle wash every few years
AcrylicCan hold dirt; wash and treat algae
MonocoucheWash gently; lime bloom often weathers off
Sand and cementRepaint as the paint fades
LimeLimewash renewed every few years if limewashed

Once a year, look along the walls: cracks, hollow patches, sealant gone hard around windows, and gutters overflowing. Small fixes now save a re-render later.

Questions we get asked

How do you clean render?

A masonry biocide, left to work, then a soft brush or low-pressure rinse. Fix the drip that caused the stain.

Can I pressure wash my render?

Not close up. High pressure can blow off a thin coat and push water behind it. Use low pressure and a biocide.

Why is my render going green?

Algae, where water runs or the wall stays damp: under sills, by gutters, on the shaded side. Treat it and fix the water.
