Silicone Render in Ireland

Silicone render costs €55–€80 per m² in Ireland, supplied and applied. It's a thin coat with the colour all the way through, so it's never painted, and it sheds rain and dirt well.

Silicone render, coat by coat

Silicone is a finish, not a whole render. It goes on in a coat a couple of millimetres thick over a sound, level background: usually a cement base coat with a fibreglass mesh bedded in it, or old render that's solid.

  1. Preparation: loose render hacked off, cracks cut out, walls cleaned.
  2. Beads: at corners, around windows and along the base.
  3. Base coat with mesh, left to cure: manufacturers ask for about two weeks before the finish.
  4. Primer, coloured to match, left a day.
  5. The silicone finish, floated to an even texture, in one go across each wall so there are no joins.

Silicone's strength is water. The resin makes rain bead and run off, so the wall stays drier and algae and dirt have less to hold on to. Many silicone renders are silicone-acrylic blends: ask what's in the one you're quoted.

Questions we get asked

How much is silicone render per m²?

€55–€80 per m² in Ireland, supplied and applied, with the base coat and mesh it needs.

Is silicone render better than acrylic?

For water and dirt, yes: silicone sheds rain and stays cleaner. Acrylic is flexible and comes in more colours, at €60–€80 per m².

Does silicone render need painting?

Silicone, monocouche and acrylic renders are coloured all the way through, so they're never painted. Sand and cement render is painted with masonry paint, and repainted when the paint fades.

How long does silicone render last?

Decades on a sound wall. Give it a gentle wash every few years, and fix any crack or sealant gap when you see it.

Can silicone go over pebble dash?

Yes, once the dash is sound and a base coat with mesh has levelled it out.
